Research Domains



In the Department of Computer Science of the School of Science of the Democritus University of Thrace, research is carried out either through the institutionalized research laboratories or individually, covering the whole range of the Department’s subjects. The research subjects of the institutionalized research laboratories are presented below:



A. Research Laboratory "HUman MAchine INteraction Laboratory - HUMAIN-Lab


The main aim of the Laboratory is high level interdisciplinary research on issues related to the study / design / development of methodologies / algorithms / systems and the provision of educational / consulting services as well as development / business initiatives on technologies through which humans can interact with machines (software and / or hardware). The research subjects of the Laboratory include:

 

1. Computational intelligence, logic and reasoning.

2. Cognitive, social, semi-autonomous and autonomous robotic systems and vehicles.

3. Artificial vision, signal processing (audio, video, video, etc.), biometric systems, pattern recognition, aggregation of dissimilar data types, innovative techniques of representation and information processing.

4. Machine learning, natural language processing, modern computation methods e.g. emotional computation, computation of large volume of data, et al.

5. Interfaces, e.g. in Internet of Things applications, cyber-physical systems, social networks, sensor networks.

6. Parallel and distributed computation as well as high performance computation.


 

B. Research Laboratory "Advanced Educational Technologies and Mobile Applications Laboratory - AETMA Lab


The research subjects of the laboratory cover the following areas:

1. Development of educational software.

2. Blended and distance learning applications, with modern and asynchronous methods.

3. Learning through mobile devices.

4. Development of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and wearable technologies.

5. Development of mobile applications - telematics applications.

6. Technology enhanced learning applications.

7. Telematic Applications - IoT (Internet of Things)

8. Computer-assisted learning for people with disabilities.

9. Data mining, analysis, evaluation and optimization of educational process and e-learning (e-learning assessment, data mining in e-learning).

10. Study of the use of virtual (2D and 3D) worlds and augmented reality in distance education.

 


C. Research Laboratory “Web Services and Information Security Laboratory - WeSIS Lab


The research subjects of the Laboratory cover the needs of society for research, development, innovation and specialized education, provision of certifications, opinions and studies in the disciplines of Internet Services and Information Security. Specifically, the research subjects of the Laboratory include, among others, the following areas:

1. Internet Services and Internet of Things services.

2. Cybersecurity and Security of networks and internet services.

3. Smart City, Smart Farming, Smart Grid, Smart Industry - Industry 4.0.

4. Security and Privacy in Internet of Things and Cyberphysical Systems.

5. e-Government and eHealth.

6. Big Data.

7. Security of mobile devices and applications.

8. Wireless and mobile communications, antennas and fiber optic networks.

 


D. Research Laboratory of "Laboratory of Industrial and Educational Embedded Systems - IEES Lab


The research subjects of the Laboratory cover the needs of society for research, development, innovation and specialized education, provision of certifications, opinions and studies in the areas of the Industrial and Educational Integrated Systems. Specifically, the research subjects of the Laboratory include the following areas:

1. Research and development of applications for the Industrial Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems.

2. Research and development of methodologies for the design of complex systems (Systems of Systems) and innovative training programs for mechanical systems.

3. Research and development of innovative educational methodologies and technologies for the dissemination of collaborative learning in the subject areas of the Laboratory.

4. Research and development of software applications and CAD tools for integrated electronic circuits and embedded systems.

 

In addition to the above research items as they are presented for each of the above research laboratories of the Department of Computer Science, its members may periodically focus on different research items. As the Informatics and Computers science is constantly evolving, new challenges and problems are emerging that require innovative solutions. The research process allows the identification of different approaches and the provision of high-quality and reliable solutions or the introduction of new innovative approaches that significantly or greatly improve the existing state of the art.
